AVGÍ: When Gin Meets Mastiha Meets Lillet Rose

Avgí or “dawn” as I have coined is a perplexing drink that is more dry and better than I anticipated. I have been trying to find a new cocktail featuring two of my favorite spirits: gin and mastiha. Lillet Rose seems to be my solution.

Lillet Rose is an incredible aperitif that features berries and other fruity notes. Even though Lillet Rose is the ideal choice to use for spritzes, it can be used as well to help bring together new cocktails.

As we transition from summer to fall, it is time to start utilizing more fall fruits as we hang on to the refreshing and light flavors of summer. Avgí does that bridge that relationship.

Ingredients:

2 oz Gin (either navy strength or dry)

1 oz Mastiha

.75 oz Lillet Rose

.5 oz Pomegranate juice

.75 oz lemon juice

4 mint leaves (muddled)

Garnish with lemon peel

Method:

  1. Combine all the ingredients: Gin, Mastiha, Lillet Rose, pomegranate juice, lemon juice, and mint in a cold cocktail shaker
  2. Shake thoroughly and pour in a chilled coupé glass
  3. Garnish with lemon peel
