Simply Syrups Part 2: The Ginger-Lime Syrup

The Prickly Punch is the drink for this holiday season. I think one of the highlights of this drink is the ginger-lime simple syrup. Not only is this element essential to the drink but it is a very useful item for making other drinks. Traditionally, simple syrup is a 1:1 ratio of water to sugar but when it comes to more flavored types of simple syrup, it is good to experiment with different ratios of sugar to water.Ingredients:

  • 3:1 ratio of water to sugar
  • 1.5 cups of water
  • .5 cup of sugar
  • 1-2 limes (juiced and zest)

Method:

  • Using a spoon, peel the ginger and cut into small pieces. This will help with the brewing process. Like any simple syrup, in a pan combine the water, sugar, ginger to a medium high heat pan until it starts to boil.
  • While the water is boiling, remove from the top of the stove top and set it to medium-low and let it continue to brew.
  • Stir constantly to combine and slowly start adding the zest and juice of 1-2 limes.
  • After about 10-15 minutes, take the pan off the heat and strain the syrup until into a bottle.
  • Let the syrup cool and start using it for drinks to it.

Ginger-lime simple syrup has a lot of applications from mojitos to mint juleps. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and get going on the Prickly Punch for your celebrations. Always keep experimenting!
