Watermelon Part 1: Frozen Mint Watermelon Margaritas: The Best Party Trick of Summer

I am dubbing August watermelon month and using it to share my four favorite recipes that I have been practicing for a while. Since starting this over a year ago, I have been learning to pick up a couple of tricks and combinations that I find work perfectly together. Welcome to part 1 of the watermelon series. Enjoy!                                                                                                           The best part of summer is what fresh fruits are grown and that you can pick off the plant or vine. Whether it\'s plums, nectarines, cherries, nothing beats a fresh slice of watermelon. Originally, I was not a big fan of watermelon until my first trip to Greece. Ever since that summer, I always try to keep watermelon close by. Now it is time to make it alcoholic. This is a super easy, super fun afternoon in the making utilizing every part of the watermelon and is a must for those last summer parties. I know that I will be doing this a couple more times throughout the months. These are large batch drinks so continue to keep testing your drinks for consistency because depending on the size of your blender, this is going to take time. Inthe pictures below, I used about half of the watermelon juice for the first round and saved the second for later.
Ingredients:
  • 1 giant watermelon
  • 1 bunch of mint (make sure it is a big one)
  • 1/2 cup of lime juice
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • Ice
Method:
  • Cut the bottom of the melon so that it will be able to lie flat on the plate or tray.
  • Using a knife, start slowly carving the top of the melon like you would carve a pumpkin. I prefer using a more star-like approach as I slowly carve it around. Once you have completed, the entire thing should come off.
  • Removing the melon: So there are a couple of tricks that I have seen online but I prefer to slowly scoop out of every piece of watermelon with a spoon into a large bowl.
  • Once the watermelon is removed, add about one bunch of melon. These are going to be the two main ingredients for your frozen margs.
  • In batches, blend the watermelon, mint and tequila, and lime juice. Don\'t forget to add a ton of ice so these can be incredible blended watermelon margaritas. Always taste the consistency and add an extra tequila when you add the ice in.
  • Slowly scoop your margs back into the watermelon and serve immediately.
This was so much fun to test last weekend and way more fun to drink with a couple of friends. While we are on in season, this is the time to get creative with fun batch drinks that will keep you cool throughout the summer. Stay thirsty! More watermelon ideas to come!
