Watermelon Part 3: More Vodka and More Melon

In part 3, we are going back to the first part of August watermelon month and keeping things simple. This is also a good time if you haven't noticed there are yellow melons. I am back carving more watermelons for a friend's going away party and this is just the best part of summer. There is nothing better than fresh watermelon. These are large batch drinks so continue to keep testing your drinks for consistency because depending on the size of your blender, this is going to take time. The technique and process are super simple and fun way to enjoy the last days of summer. I know I had a fun time making this batch drink and pairing it with other spirits.Ingredients:1 giant watermelon which gave me approximately 1 gallon of melon1 bunch of mint (make sure it is a big one)1/2 cup of lemon juice1/4 cup of sugar1 bottle of vodka (go with Absolut, it's just better, nothing flavored)

IceMethod:
  • Cut the bottom of the melon so that it will be able to lie flat on the plate or tray.
  • Using a knife, start slowly carving the top of the melon like you would carve a pumpkin. I prefer using a more star-like approach as I slowly carve it around. Once you have completed, the entire thing should come off.
  • Removing the melon: So there are a couple of tricks that I have seen online but I prefer to slowly scoop out of every piece of watermelon with a spoon into a large bowl or container.
  • Once the watermelon is removed, add about one bunch of mint. These are going to be the two main ingredients for your frozen vodka slushies.
  • In batches, blend the watermelon, mint and vodka, and lemon juice. Don't forget to add 1/4 cup of ice when you are doing this in batches. This is just easier and once the watermelon juice is blended you have more control over the amount of ice and making that classic slushie.
  • Slowly scoop your margs back into the watermelon and serve immediately.
Part 3 was definitely a repeat, but it just goes to show how versatile you can use most spirits and a giant watermelon. I do strongly recommend staying away from more sweeter spirits like rum. However, vodka and tequila are just better to use overall.  At the time of my post, my birthday is in two days. I am excited because I will be ending the 4th part of this series with a nod to my first post on this blog. Next time, I will be posting the ultimate summer sangria!
