The Autumn Plum: A Gin Cocktail for the Fall

The Autumn Plum was my drink that I submitted for Vitae's autumn competition this week. It was such a fun opportunity and even though it didn't get selected, I am going to continue to find more opportunities to submit drinks. Seriously, go check them out! I love their products so much and they are worth the addition to your cabinet.

Now for the Autumn Plum. I think the best part of the end of summer and early fall days as the leaves are starting to change is having plums available. Plums are in season starting around mid July through October depending on the weather. In the DMV, we have excellent farmers who bring carts of this every week. One of my first drinks that I create was the Prickly Pear featuring a plum simple syrup.

Ingredients:

  • Cinnamon
  • 1 ounce Plum Simple Syrup (the simple syrup is 3:2 water to sugar so the plums could really shine and simmer in there on medium/medium low heat for about 15 mins)
  • 2 ounces of Old Tom Gin
  • .5 ounce of lime juice
  • 3-4 ounces of ginger beer
  • Garnish with a slice of plum

Method:

  • In a cold glass, lightly rim the glass with cinnamon and place a large ice cube and rotate the cube until it's cold. Dispose the water and prepare the drink in a cocktail shaker.
  • In a cocktail shaker, combine the gin, lime juice, plum simple syrup, a pinch of cinnamon, and shake thoroughly.
  • Pour into a cold glass and garnish with a slice of plum and serve.
  • This drink plays a bit of homage to that cocktail and I think plums can have a fun and flavorful role in cocktails! Go find plums today and try this yourself.
